ESG-aligned banking, sharpened to the right surface.

A direct-to-consumer digital bank concept with ESG-aligned deposits, an ethical-footprint tracker, and a recycled-plastic debit card. The two-year-later rediscovery of the values-led-investing thesis Citi had first surfaced in Impact-Investful (2018).

Challenge.

Citi had a values-led investing thesis surfaced two years earlier in Impact-Investful (2018) that had not been carried forward into a shipped product. The decision in 2020 was: same strategic thesis, sharper surface? An ESG-aligned bank account with deposits and a debit card felt more concrete than an ESG-aligned investing app.

Approach.

• Demand test under a fresh unbranded domain with the digital-bank value proposition.
• Three product pillars on test: ESG-aligned deposits, ethical-footprint tracker, and recycled-plastic debit card.
• Run as a parallel track within Workplace Banking, sharing audience and channel infrastructure.

Outcome.

• Validated as a track, demand signal sufficient to carry the values-led-banking direction forward.
• Ethical-footprint tracker emerged as the strongest of the three product pillars.

Methodology lessons.

• Same strategic thesis, sharper surface is a valid product-shape iteration when the original test surfaced demand for the underlying value but not for the proposed shape.
